「―が~を…する」という文の「―が」の部分に当たる語を主語(Subject)と呼ぶ。主語になるものは、名詞・代名詞のほか、名詞相当語句*1に限られる。
主語になる名詞相当語句の例 †
(1) 名詞 †
- Necessity is the mother of invention.
(2) 代名詞 †
- They are in a financial trouble right now.
- 彼らはいま財政難の真っ只中にいる。(代名詞が主語になると主格が使われる)
(3) 形容詞 †
- The rich are not always happy.
- 金持ちがいつも幸せだとは限らない。(通常<the+形容詞>のかたちで用いられる)
(4) 分詞 †
- The accused objected to the judgement.
- 被告はその判決に反対した。(通常<the+形容詞>のかたちで用いられる)
(5) 不定詞 †
(6) 動名詞 †
- Getting up early is good for your health.
(7) 名詞句 †
- How to live is more important than how to die.
- What he says cannot be true.
(9) 引用語句 †
- "Maybe." is what she always says.
- 「たぶんね。」とは、彼女がいつも口にするセリフだ。
複合主語と形式主語 †
主語には、一般的な主語に加えて複合主語と形式主語の2つがある。
(1) 複合主語 †
- John and Mike are good friends.
- Fish and chips is nice to eat.
- フィッシュ=アンド=チップスは美味しい。
- 主語が複数の名詞でも意味的に単一のものを指すときは単数扱いになる。
(2) 形式主語 †
主部が長すぎると文のバランスが悪くなるため、 it を形式的に置くことで主語の代用とし、後ろの主語を受けさせることがある。このとき、 it を形式主語(Formal Subject)と呼び、後ろの主語を真主語(Real Subject)と呼ぶ。真主語は不定詞・動名詞・名詞節などの名詞相当語句である。
- It is important to understand each other.
- It is no use crying over spilt milk.
- It does not matter whether you like it or not.
