関係副詞：where

関係副詞whereは、先行詞が場所を表す名詞で、かつ、関係代名詞が副詞句の一部になっているとき用いられる。関係副詞whereはふつう省略しない。

具体的な場所を先行詞にとる場合 †

• This is the place where they used to live.
• = This is the place in which they used to live.
  • ここが、彼らがかつて住んでいた場所です。

次の文では、先行詞は場所を表す名詞だが関係副詞whereを使うことはできない。

• This is the place (which) I visited last year.
  • ここは私が去年訪れた場所です。

抽象的な場所を先行詞にとる場合 †

• There are many cases where Japanese modesty causes misunderstanding.
  • 日本人の謙虚さが誤解を招く場合が多々ある。
• There are many situations where e-mail is valuable.
  • 電子メールが有用な状況というのは往々にしてある。
