to不定詞が、動詞/形容詞/副詞を補足的に説明する用法をまとめてto不定詞の副詞用法と呼ぶ。以下に述べる分類とその解説は、訳し方や使い方などに応じた便宜的なものである。
副詞用法による動詞修飾 †
目的 †
- George is saving the money to buy an engagement ring for his girlfriend.
- ジョージは、恋人に婚約指輪を買うためにお金を貯めている。
- Be careful not to catch a cold.
- 風邪を引かないように注意しなさい。
- 否定の目的を表す場合、<be careful not to do>や<take care not to do>のように、「~しないように気をつける」という表現以外のときは、<so as not to do>や<in order not to do>を用いるのが普通。
目的の意味をより明確にしたい場合は、次のような表現を用いる。
in order to~:~するために †
- He did anything in order to survive the war.
- = He did anything in order that he could survive the war.
- You have to make your point clear in order not to cause a misunderstanding.
- = You have to make your point clear in order that you won’t cause a misunderstanding.
so as to~:結果として~となるように †
- I took a detour so as to avoid a traffic jam.
- = I took a detour so that I could avoid a traffic jam.
結果 †
「…した結果~する」という意味を表す。
- My great-grandfather lived to be 106.
- I woke up to find myself in a hospital bed.
- 眼が覚めると、私は病院のベッドに横たわっていることに気がついた。
- I emailed her to let her know my schedule for next week.
- 私は彼女に電子メールを送って、私の来週の予定を知らせた。
- 「知らせるために電子メールを送った」(目的)とも解釈できる。どちらの意味になるかは文脈による。
only to~:結局~する結果に終わる †
結果を表す慣用表現に、only toとnever toがある。
- She hurried to the station, only to find that they had already left.
never to~:二度と~しない結果となる †
- He went to Africa for research, never to come back.
- 彼は調査でアフリカに行き、二度と戻ってこなかった。
感情の原因 †
感情を表す語の後ろについて、その感情が生起した原因や理由を説明する。
- I was surprised to hear that his company had gone bankrupt.
- 彼の会社が倒産したと聞いて僕は驚いた。
- to不定詞は形容詞surprisedを修飾しているとも考えられる。
判断の根拠 †
「~するとは(…に違いない)」という意味を表す。強い推量の助動詞mustとともに使われることが比較的多い。
- Jim must be out of his mind to refuse such a juicy offer.
- そんな美味しい話を蹴るなんて、ジムはどうかしているに違いない。
- How lucky you are to have such beautiful hair!
- そんなに美しい髪を持っているなんて、あなたはなんて幸せなのでしょう!
- You are very lucky to have such beautiful hair.の感嘆文。
副詞用法による形容詞や副詞の修飾 †
形容詞を補足的に修飾する場合 †
<~して嬉しい>型 †
- I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed my web-site.
- 君が僕のWebサイトを楽しんでくれたと聞いて嬉しいよ。
<~するのが速い>型 †
- My cell phone is fast to become low battery.
- 僕の携帯電話はすぐに電池不足になる。
- この表現をとる主な形容詞は、quick(素早い) / slow(遅い) / swift(素早い)など。
<~するとは親切だ>型 †
この表現をとる主な形容詞は、brave(勇敢な) / careful(注意深い) / kind(親切な) / wise(聡明な)など、人間の性格や性向を説明するものが多い。
- I was careless to leave my house key in my car.
- 不注意にも、私は家の鍵を車の中に置いてきてしまった。
- 判断の根拠とも考えられる。
- It was careless of me to leave….とも書ける。詳しくは、<of+意味上の主語の目的格>で表す場合を参照。
<きっと~する>型 †
- Bob is [sure | certain] to come here.
- ボブはきっとここに来る(と私は思う)。
- Sではなく、話者(私)の確信を表す。I'm [sure | certain] that Bob will come here.とも書ける。
<~したがっている>型 †
- Children are eager to know everything.
- He is not likely to show up.
- = It is not likely that he will show up.
- <~したがっている>型の主な表現
- be anxious to~ :~することを切望する(不安や懸念の気持ちを含む)
- be ambitious to~:~することを熱望する
- be eager to~:~することを熱望する
- be keen to~:~することを熱望する
- be apt to~:~する傾向にある(本質的な性向として)
- be inclined to~:~したい気になる/(体質的に)~する傾向にある
- be likely to~:~しそうである
- be ready to~:~する用意ができている
- be willing to~:~する意志がある
<~するのが難しい>型(TOUGH構文) †
- This puzzle is easy to solve.
程度を表す表現 †
enough to~:~するのに十分な †
- He is rich enough to buy a car.
- 彼は車を買えるほどの金持ちだ。
- He is so rich that he can buy a yacht.(彼はとても金持ちなのでヨットを買える)とは意味が異なる。「車を買えるくらいの財力はある」という意味であり、「とても金持ちだ」とはならないので注意が必要である。
- They ran fast enough to catch the train.
too … to~:あまりに…なので~できない(しない) †
- I've recently been too busy to read a book.
- 私は近ごろ忙しすぎて本を読む暇もありません。
- 形式主語構文との混同に注意。It is never too late to learn.(学ぶのに遅すぎることはない)は形式主語構文であり、to不定詞(to learn)は名詞用法である。
- This story is too good to be true.
- He is too good a translator to make such a mistake.
- 彼は、とても有能な通訳なので、そんな間違いは犯さない。
- 副詞tooが<[a | an]+形容詞+名詞>の形容詞を修飾すると、<too+形容詞+[a | an]+名詞>の語順になる。同様の倒置を起こす副詞に、as / how / soがある。
- a too good translatorの形も可。
否定の文脈で用いると<~できないほど…というわけではない>という肯定の意味になる。
- He is not too poor to buy a car.
- = He is rich enough to buy a car.
to不定詞を否定すると<あまりにも…なので~しないわけにいかない/きっと~する>という強い肯定の意味になる。
- This chocolate is too good not to share with you.
- このチョコレートはとても美味しいから、ぜひあなたにも食べて欲しいの。
so … as to~:~するほど… †
- Clare's hair is so long as to reach the floor.
- = Clare’s hair is long enough to reach the floor.
- I am not so naive as to believe that everyone in this world is honest and never lies to me.
- = I am mature enough not to believe that….
- 僕は、この世の誰もが誠実で決して僕に嘘をつかないと信じるほど、世間知らずではない。
- 形容詞naiveは、日本語では「純真な/無邪気な」という肯定的な意味で用いられることが多いが、英語では「世間知らずの/だまされやすい」という否定的なニュアンスで用いられることのほうが多い。
[FYI] TOUGH構文 †
<It is C to 不定詞>という形式主語構文において、その補語が難易(easy / difficult / hard / toughなど)や快・不快(comfortable / uncomfortableなど)、危険・安全(dangerous / safeなど)を表す語であり、かつ、to不定詞内に名詞が存在する場合、その名詞を主語にすることができる。このようにして出来た文をTOUGH構文と呼び、to不定詞内の名詞が主語の位置に移動する現象をTOUGH移動と呼ぶ。
- It is safe to drink this water.[形式主語構文]
- This water is safe to drink.[TOUGH構文]
- It is dangerous to swim in this pond.[形式主語構文]
- This pond is dangerous to swim in.[TOUGH構文]
形式主語構文では名詞用法として働いているto不定詞が、TOUGH構文ではCを修飾する副詞用法として働いている。
