<助動詞+完了形>のかたちは、現在から見た過去の推量/後悔/非難などを表す。
cannot+完了形:~したはずがない †
- You cannot have seen Mr. Smith yesterday. He died the day before yesterday!
- 君が昨日スミスさんに会ったはずがないよ。彼は一昨日亡くなったのだから!
- 「会えなかった」(過去の可能)を表すには、could not see / was not able to seeとする。
may+完了形:~したかもしれない †
- He [may | might] have overslept this morning.
- 彼は今朝寝坊したのかもしれない。
- mightを使うと、自信の持てない過去の推量(ひょっとしたら~だったかもしれない)を表す。
must+完了形:~したに違いない †
- Bill must have been tired last week. He made a lot of mistakes.
- ビルは先週疲れていたに違いない。ヘマばかりしていた。
need not+完了形:~する必要はなかった(のに実際はした) †
- You needn't have come here at three o'clock. We don't start till four.
- あなたは3時にここに来る必要はなかったのに。4時開始なんですよ。
[should | ought to]+完了形:~すべきだったのに(実際はしなかった)/~したはずだ †
- You [should | ought to] have come to the party last night. We had a lot of fun.
- 昨夜のパーティーに来るべきでしたよ。本当に楽しかったんですよ。
- He [should | ought to] have arrived at his office by now.
