have toの表す意味は、基本的にmustの用法に準じると考えてよいが、その表す意味は、have toが客観性を表すのに対してmustは主観性を帯びるという違いがある。
法助動詞のmustと違い、have toは<助動詞have+to不定詞>のかたちを持つため法助動詞と組み合わせて用いることができる。過去形はhad toになる。イギリス英語では、<have got to不定詞>のかたちを取ることもあり、さらに、くだけたアメリカ英語ではhaveが省略されて<got to不定詞>と表現されることもある。

have toの発音に注意すること。have toは、母音の前では [hæftu] /子音の前では [hæftə]。has toは、母音の前では [hæstu]/子音の前では [hæstə]。had toは、母音の前では [hættu]/子音の前では [hættə]。
必要(~しなければならない) †
have toは客観的な必要性を表わし、主観的な必要を述べるmustに比べて響きが柔らかい。
- You have to apologize to him.
- 君は彼に謝らなければならない。
- You must apologize to him.よりも響きが穏やか。イギリス英語ではYou’ve got to apologize to him.とも言う。
- We will have to face serious environmental problems in the near future.
- 近い将来、我々は深刻な環境問題に直面せねばならないだろう。[法助動詞のwillとの併用]
- He didn't have to study all night.
強い推量(~にちがいない) †
- He has to be joking.
- 彼は冗談を言っているにちがいない。
- He must be joking.とほぼ同意。イギリス英語ではHe’s got to be joking.とも言う。
その他:have only toとhave yet to †
have only toは、「~しさえすればよい」の意味を表す。口語ではonly have to/have just toとも言う。
have only to ~:~しさえすればよい †
- You have only to sign here.
have yet to ~:まだ~していない †
have yet toは「まだ~していない」の意味を表す。
- I have yet to solve the puzzle.
- = I haven’t solved the puzzle yet.
